Direct mail costs far more per contact than email and continues to be used by businesses that measure carefully. The reasons lie in economics rather than nostalgia.
The cost structure sets the qualifying offer
Printing, postage and list costs mean each piece carries a real unit cost before anyone responds. A campaign therefore requires either a high value per conversion or a high response rate.
That arithmetic rules out low-margin, impulse-priced products and rules in home services, financial products, healthcare practices, insurance and business-to-business offers with substantial contract value.
The same arithmetic makes list quality the dominant variable. Waste in an email send costs almost nothing; waste in a mail drop is paid for in full.
Attention competition differs by channel
A household receives a large volume of email and a small volume of physical mail. The denominator, not the medium, produces the difference in noticed rate.
Mail also persists physically. A piece left on a counter is re-encountered over days, whereas an unopened email moves down a list and is effectively gone.
This advantage narrows as more advertisers return to the channel. It is a function of relative crowding, and it is not permanent.
Targeting works on geography and household attributes
Mail is addressed to locations, so it targets naturally on neighborhood, property characteristics and route. Businesses serving a defined radius can cover it precisely.
Saturation mailing to every address on a delivery route is priced differently from addressed mail to a selected list, and the choice between them depends on how broadly the offer applies.
Consumer data appended to addresses supports finer selection, and use of that data is subject to privacy rules that differ by state and continue to change.
Measurement requires deliberate design
There is no automatic click. Attribution depends on codes, dedicated phone numbers, unique landing addresses or matching responders against the mailed list after the fact.
Response also arrives slowly. A piece may sit for weeks before acting, so reading results too early understates performance and prompts premature cancellation.
Holdout groups are the cleanest method available. Withholding mail from a randomly selected portion of the list isolates the campaign's effect from background demand.
Regulation applies differently than to email
Commercial email is governed by federal rules on identification and opt-out, and text messaging by separate consent requirements. Postal advertising sits under a different framework.
Recipients can request removal through preference services and directly from the sender, and honoring those requests is both a compliance matter and a cost saving.
Requirements for prescreened offers, financial solicitations and healthcare communication are more specific and vary by sector and state. A firm mailing in those categories should have the creative reviewed by counsel before it prints.
